Friends of Seaton Park : CakeFest 5
Cakefest 5 took place on Saturday 24th March at Dunbar Street Halls. The event was attended by over 100 people who were able to sample a selection of the 32 cakes entered for judging.
We held the first ever CakeFest in March 2014. The original concept was a Bake Off similar to the Great British Bake Off. However, the idea evolved so that the event become a unique experience much loved by everyone who attends. Preparation begins in April each year as we debrief from Cakefest and note what worked and what did not and how to improve for the next year. Later in the year we will identify a date and early in 2019 a small group will meet to plan the finer details.
Bakers are asked to submit their best bakes. We don’t usually have specific categories. The judges are the paying public who can choose three pieces of cake and vote for their favourite. At the end of the morning, the cake with the most votes wins. This year’s winner was Graeme Stephen with his “Prodigious Pavlova”. Second equal was Neil McMillan (New York Cheesecake) and Maria Morales (Tablet Cheesecake). Third prize went to Elaine Cordiner for her “Hummingbird Cake”. The first prize of the coveted CakeFest apron was a special triumph for Graeme – his wife won CakeFest 4. A very talented team! Their grandchild won the decorate a cup cake competition so it looks like the Stephens will be keeping it in the family!
As well as eating cake, CakeFest patrons could visit the craft stall where various hand made items could be purchased. A raffle was held with all prizes donated. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the many members of the public who donated prizes and everyone who purchased tickets. A special thank you goes to local businesses (Brig o Don, Shish Tandoori, Casa di Gelato, Morrisons and Websters Pharmacy) who all donated splendid prizes.
We would also like to thank the volunteers, friends and family who helped on the day – Mary Mac, Alexis, Diane, Iris and Kelly, Tracey and Linda. You are all stars!!!
After a short pause to gather strength, we will soon begin planning our next big event which is ParkFest 4. ParkFest will be held in the park on Sunday 9th September from 1.00 – 4.00 p.m. We are planning a similar programme to previous years. If you have an idea for taking part, then please be in touch. Also if you would like to help with the planning of the event, we’d love to hear from you. Finally, if you know where the form to apply for a lovely sunny day is located, then please forward it to me immediately!
